This small Park View condominium has sweeping views of Lake Merritt in Oakland, California. I wanted the interior to reflect the client's personality and his lifestyle, so my goal was to maximize its size and usability.

Because the client was adamant about not blocking the view, I chose furnishings low to the ground. This also gives the condo the illusion of height, as did mounting a large painting high on the wall. The lighting compliments the view as well, with dimmers controlling the amount of reflection and glare.

To make the space feel bigger, I chose the mirror over the sideboard in the dining area because it opens new and different windows to the outdoors (a flat wall of mirrors would have had the counter-effect, repeating the view and thus making the space feel smaller).

In the living area, I custom designed the yellow area rug with circles to soften the square angles of the room and the sofas. The color was based on the owner's love of yellow and the result is a bold (but not too bold) presence on the floor. The client also wanted a warm and cozy feeling in the bedroom, so I chose dark earth tones for the walls and modern bed coverings, with a slight Oriental touch. The wall hangings from Africa are a subtle tribute to the client's heritage.

"The space now feels nearly twice as big as it did before," said the client. "I'm thrilled that it reflects my life and who I am."
