Hansine Pedersen Goran is a talented designer of modern carpets (www.CurrentCarpets.com). She and her husband built a stunning modern home in the coastal development of The Sea Ranch, one hundred miles north of San Francisco.
With Hansine's carpets setting the stage, I chose furnishings to complement the home's unique natural setting and its owners' lifestyles. I wanted pieces that create a sense of calm and continuity, so each room has primary furnishings from Walter Knoll (Germany) and each piece is covered in identical leather. To maximize interior space, I used ottomans to perform double-duty as moveable coffee tables or extra seating.
In this home, the sea is the focal point. The living room sofa, bedroom chairs and dining room stools all offer a comfortable place to watch the crashing waves. For an end table, I chose the whimsical Og table from Capellini because its silky rope legs resemble those of a sea creature.
Since I strongly believe in harmonizing a home with its environment, outdoor furnishings are important. In this case, I used five enormous Saralunga planters in the front courtyard to add to the spaciousness of the area. And, because my clients enjoy entertaining, I used a Walter Knoll aluminum table and chairs, as well as a rolling bench lounger, to encourage guests to linger.
The result is a place where Hansine and her family can join with friends and enjoy nature. Or, they can simply reflect inward. For that purpose, I arranged four Jasper Morrison Thinking Man chairs along the span of the deck, facing outwards to the ocean.
