The owners of this 900-square foot co-op on Manhattanís Upper West Side were a husband-and-wife just starting out, and the challenge was providing them with enough storage space for their combined households while maintaining the spaceís open feel.

Fortunately, I was given free reign to start from the ground up. Beginning with the living room, I chose a sleek wall unit that houses the television and whose cabinets help keep things organized and hidden from view. The bedroom was similarly constrained for space, so I took advantage of space beneath the bed and dressers to create extra storage for clothes and shoes. The office space, which contains a modern desk, doubles as a guest space with an inflatable Aero Bed.

As is typical of most NYC apartments, the kitchen is tiny so all of the accessories are in simple white ñ this avoids the closed-in feeling that accompanies such small spaces. The walls in the rest of the apartment are painted in light colors, with splashes of photographic art to infuse a sense of energy. I also replaced all of the lighting with simple modern fixtures that cast a natural glow.

Perhaps the most unique feature of this space is the expansive, 1,400-square foot outdoor deck. My goal was to extend the living area outside, with a modern yet durable dining table and barbeque that are perfect for alfresco dining. Additionally, I planted trees in modern Serralunga pots to create a wall of green that is visible from inside the living room window. I also placed different potted grasses next to the lounge chairs, thus creating an urban oasis that feels miles away from the hustle of the streets below.
